Driving in São Jorge: Master the Roads to the Fajãs

São Jorge features some of the most spectacular, high-elevation driving routes in the archipelago, running along a central volcanic spine. However, reaching the island’s signature flat coastal plains (fajãs)—such as Fajã dos Cubres or Fajã de São João—requires driving down steep, narrow switchbacks cut into the cliffs.

Our Fleet Recommendation: Because of the sustained steep grades and sharp turns, we highly recommend renting a car with a robust engine (diesel or higher-displacement petrol) or an automatic transmission to eliminate the stress of hill-starts on tight mountain curves.
